International Women's Day 2023

Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls celebrating International Women's Day on Wednesday 8th March 2023.

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

Plan for Wednesday 8th March 2023

  • We have Jade Barnett coming in to talk to Year 9 and 10 students - she is a motivational speaker, an Advocate for Youth Inclusion and Opportunity and works with various organisations including being a senior member of the Violence Reduction Unit's Young People's Action Group and a Youth Development Lead for the Prince's Trust.
  • We have a Career Hop event for Years 7, 8 and 9 - this gives our students the opportunity to speak to women from a wide variety of career areas including entrepreneurs, business owners, media, scientists, engineers, project managers, recruitment, education, medicine, law and many more!
  • Students will be learning about the theme of Embracing Equity - what this means to them and what it means in the wider world.
  • Older students will be working with younger students on expressing themselves through spoken word and students from the Poly 6th form will also be visiting and working with our students on the day.

Information for parents/carers:                                                                        Students wearing purple items on Wednesday 8th march 2023

Dear Parents/Carers,

Re: International Women’s Day

We are pleased to announce that we will be celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) on Wednesday 8th March.

“International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for moving towards gender parity.” (The International Women’s Day Website)

This year the theme is #EmbracingEquity. Students will be taking part in a variety of activities during the day to promote this, including meeting dozens of female visitors from a wide variety of jobs and having the opportunity to ask them questions about their career paths and experiences.

The International Women’s Day organisation use the colour purple in their promotional materials, so we ask all students and staff to wear something purple to school for IWD.  We won’t be asking for donations this year; this will simply be to raise awareness of the event and to join in with the theme.

Students can choose to wear an item or combination of items that are purple from the following list:

    • Purple socks/tights
    • Purple shirt
    • Purple tie
    • Purple ribbon/badges
    • Purple hair accessories

(Purple make up/nails are not allowed)

Full school uniform should be worn in addition to any of the above items.

Yours faithfully,

Ms H Zbrzezniak
