  • Message for parents/carers: Knife Crime

    Published 28/09/23

    Dear Parents/Carers,

I'm sure you are all aware of the death of a young lady in Croydon yesterday. She was stabbed to death on her way to school.

I'm sure you agree we all need to work together to stop our young people feeling that they need or want to carry a knife.

In school, we have lessons, conversations and assemblies on the topic. The School Police Officer also addresses students.

I have attached a leaflet from the Ben Kinsella Charity, that outlines how to have conversations as parents.

Please get in touch if we can help in any way.

  • Jeans for Genes - Friday 22nd September 2023

    Published 20/09/23

    Dear Parents/Carers,

WPSfG will be taking part in this year’s Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 22nd September.

1 in 25 children has a genetic disorder that makes their life very difficult. That’s like one in every class. By wearing our jeans and donating, we will change the lives of these children.

All children and staff are invited to wear their jeans on Friday 22nd September. We’d like everyone to take part so please encourage your child to come into school on the day wearing their jeans and with a £1 donation.  We expect students to simply swap their usual skirt or trousers for jeans, they must still wear the rest of their school uniform (shirt, tie, blazer and shoes).  Jeans also need to be neat and suitable for school with no tears, rips or emblems.

We will sharing information with students throughout the week so that they have an understanding of how important it is for us to take part and support this cause.

Jeans for Genes Day have a series of powerful films to explain how your child’s donation will make a difference. Each film provides a compelling and personal insight, introducing some amazing children living with genetic disorders, sharing first-hand what life is like with their condition. Please visit jeansforgenes.org/schools for more information and to view these films.

If you’d like to find out more about how our support will help, please visit their website at jeansforgenes.org

    Thank you,

    The WPSfG team

  • The Jack Petchey Spark Programme - Year 10 Wednesday 6th September 2023

    Published 07/09/23

On Wednesday 6th September we welcomed 10 facilitators in to deliver the Jack Petchey Spark Programme to our Year 10 cohort.

The Jack Petchey Spark Programme has been inspired by Sir Jack’s own go-getting approach to life and is designed to help students to cope successfully with pressures in and out of school, maintain their well-being, support their success at (and beyond) school, and to build their readiness and capabilities for the future.

The workshop helps students to understand and experience how mindset affects our ability to be at our best, to achieve our goals and overcome problems, and our relationships with others. It gives young people helpful tools and insights to help them to be at their best more of the time, even when facing uncertainty, tricky challenges, and stressful situations, and to successfully navigate the challenges and opportunities that they encounter on their journey to adulthood.

The workshop is delivered by BTS Spark facilitators experienced in working with young people.  All resources and guidance were provided, and students received their own handbook and programme certificate.

An amazing day full of activities, thought-provoking challenges and discussion, such a great way to start the school year for our Year 10 students.

  • Is my child too ill for school? - NHS Attendance Advice Letter

    Published 06/09/23

It can be tricky deciding whether or not to keep your child off school, nursery or playgroup when they're unwell.

There are government guidelines for schools and nurseries about managing specific infectious diseases at GOV.UK. These say when children should be kept off school and when they shouldn't.

If you do keep your child at home, it's important to phone the school or nursery on the first day. Let them know that your child won't be in and give them the reason.

If your child is well enough to go to school but has an infection that could be passed on, such as a cold sore or head lice, let their teacher know.

  • Woolwich Polytechnic Sixth Form - A Level Results Day 2023

    Published 21/08/23

It is with tremendous pride that Woolwich Polytechnic Sixth Form, rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, celebrates the success of the Class of 2023.

47% of our students received A* - B grades, with a significant number continuing their academic pathways at Russell Group universities, including Cambridge, Edinburgh, and Warwick amongst others.

Head of School, Mr Tom Lawrence states, "Our class of 2023 have done themselves proud and nearly all have achieved their first-place offers or high-end apprenticeships, securing an average grade that matches 2019 and 2022. We have many students again going to illustrious Russell Group universities. The results day itself has been a great day of rightful celebration for staff and students. All these enormous achievements have been made against a backdrop of significantly tougher marking, particularly at the top end."

This sentiment is shared by Mr Tim Plumb, CEO of PolyMAT, "After such hard work through challenging times, it was fantastic to see so many students with happy faces, being rewarded with progression to university and apprenticeships. This is why we all work so hard, to change lives and ensure ‘Success for Everyone’ that will last for many years to come."

Ms Hannah Elliott, Head of Sixth Form, comments: “I am so proud of all our students here at Woolwich Poly. Each of them has shown resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Year on year, our results echo our school ethos of ‘Tomorrow's Leaders’ demonstrating the dedication and commitment of the students themselves, as well as our hardworking staff and supportive wider community. We look forward to seeing the future successes of our students as our Sixth Form expands next year to accommodate Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls.”
