  • FREE Guide - What parents/carers need to know about money muling

    Published 26/06/23

A free online safety guide on money muling.

Criminal organisations digitally ‘launder’ the illegal profits of their operations (including scams and drug deals) by moving funds through innocent-looking accounts, which makes it harder for the police to track. To achieve this, they often recruit young people – money mules – who are trusting enough to be taken in by their advances and simply see an easy way to make some cash.

These impressionable youngsters are sometimes approached to take part in person – but more commonly it happens through social media, where the criminals use euphemistic titles like ‘money transfer agencies’. Our #WakeUpWednesday guide takes a look at this emerging online hazard, highlighting how trusted adults can help to protect young people from money muling.

A free online safety guide on AI virtual friends.

Artificial intelligence is probably the hot topic in technology circle right now, with questions being raised worldwide about how AI might conceivably affect the very future of the human race. In the short term, however – definitely as far as its impact on young people is concerned – the clearest risk is almost certainly the AI-powered ‘virtual friends’ which are springing up all over the internet.

There’s Replika and Kuki, for instance, while Snapchat has recently got in on the act with My AI – and search engines like Bing and Google have developed their own versions. Are these machine intelligences suitable online companions for young people? What are their limitations and weak spots? Our #WakeUpWednesday guide profiles the emergence of AI ‘virtual friends’.

  • Year 10 student wins Star Pupil Award the National Be Kind Awards 2023

    Published 21/06/23

Year 10 student, Michelle wins Star Pupil Award at the National Be Kind Awards 2023.

A few months ago, staff at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls decided to nominate Year 10 student Michelle for a Be Kind Award.

The Be Kind awards are all about recognising and celebrating young people not just for their academic achievements in school but also for the way that they treat others and show acts of kindness. Individual students, student groups and schools can be nominated in different categories relating to kindness. We nominated Michelle due to her wonderful, caring, patient and kind nature, especially when one of her friends was going through the most awful experience.  In 2021, Michelle’s friend was suddenly diagnosed with a life altering brain tumour. She endured several operations and rounds of chemotherapy and was out of school for a year. During this time Michelle made sure that she kept in touch, on the phone and in person when she was allowed; she kept her up to date with all the school gossip and when she couldn’t respond she would talk to her and text her anyway!

Michelle has helped her friend to regain her speech and has supported her physically to regain her movement, independence, and strength, especially on days when she finds that difficult. Michelle supports her friend both in school and outside of school, and we really wanted to show Michele how grateful and proud everyone is of her. Once we sent the nomination, we didn’t hear anything for a long time and assumed that unfortunately Michelle hadn’t been shortlisted. A few weeks ago, we received an email from the award winners saying that Michelle had indeed been shortlisted for the Star Pupil award!

On Monday 19th June 2023, Michelle and her friend were escorted all the way to Manchester by a member of staff to attend the awards ceremony. They were extremely excited to be going and hoping for the best. They had a great day and were astounded when the winners were being announced and Michelle’s name was called! Michelle had won the Star Pupil category at the National Be Kind Awards!

On behalf of everyone here at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls we are so very proud of Michelle and all that she has done and continues to do for her best friend. Michelle is one of the most selfless, giving and kind humans, and we are very lucky to have her within our school community.

  • PolyMAT - Who are we?

    Published 16/06/23

We have had a number of new followers across our platforms recently, and we wanted to reintroduce ourselves to those of you who may not know about our trust PolyMAT.

PolyMAT was established in 2014 when our only school was Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys, a long-successful 11-18 Comprehensive school serving the people of Thamesmead. Our early priority was to deliver the same quality of provision for girls in Thamesmead, and we set about opening Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls. In September 2019, this became a reality, and we are very proud that we now offer excellent education for up to 2800 students in Thamesmead.

Our Vision is “Success for Everyone” and this places inclusion and well-being at the heart of everything we do. More than anything else, PolyMAT is an organisation that puts people first as we know that they are our greatest asset.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our relationships and the shared desire to give our students the best possible opportunities to become the people that they want to be. We hope that you share our passion for putting people first and creating the most positive environment possible for success to thrive; we always know that we get the best from ourselves when we help others get the best from themselves.

We would like blazers to be worn to school, as a compulsory part of our school uniform. However, they can be removed during the day when it warms up.

Please ensure your child has a bottle of water that can be filled with water at break and lunch times and that they wear sun cream as appropriate.
