Geography

'Preparing curious and capable geographers to be responsible global citizens'

At Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls, we endeavour to nurture our students’ curiosity about the world around them. While we believe that curiosity is fundamental, it is even better when coupled with capability. Therefore, our key stage 3 and GCSE curriculum provides the richness of knowledge and skills that students need to be active global citizens for their entire lives.

Students will study both human and physical geography topics, including, The Changing Economic World, Physical Landscapes in the UK and Urban Issues and Challenges, and will also complete a fieldwork study in two contrasting environments. Students’ understanding of places and processes will be applied to real case study examples, and they will be required to articulate their understanding using complex writing skills (explaining, justifying, assessing, and evaluating).

Students will develop a range of geographical skills (map skills, graphical skills, numerical and statistical skills). They will also develop enquiry skills such as hypothesis building, questionnaire design, field work and data collection. They will be able to use various types of maps, geographical information systems (GIS), new technologies and equipment to collect, present and analyse data in their fieldwork investigations. Students will also be encouraged to develop their questioning, investigation, and critical thinking skills.
