Our library is a busy, vibrant centre which has reading at its heart. It is a hub not only for books, but also a safe space where pupils come together for discussion, wellbeing, to do homework, and to make new friends.

Library Values

In the library we encourage, above everything else, reading and respect. The most vital thing for our library is that we foster a love of books and a culture of respect.

Reading is at the core of everything our library stands for. The library is run by an experienced librarian and has a good selection of both fiction and non-fiction books which is regularly updated with new, interesting, and popular stock.

In the library, students can also:

• Use computers to complete homework.
• Buy stationery.
• Play chess.
• Study.

We also ensure that the library is a safe, welcoming place for those who may need a break away from the playground and canteen. With comfy seating areas and access to crayons, colouring, and mindful activities, we make sure that pupils can take a quick breather from the day-to-day hustle and bustle of school life.

Extra-curricular activities

• Reading groups – Across the school year, there are various opportunities to be a part of different reading groups for all ages.
• Homework Hub – This runs in the library four days a week after school. It is a drop-in session for students to have a quiet space to complete homework at the end of the school day.
• Poly Press – The library is also the home of our student-run school newspaper, the Poly Press. Students can sign up by speaking to our school librarian or dropping into a meeting on Mondays after school.

Reading Champions and Student Librarians

In Year 7, students with a passion for reading can apply to be a Reading Champion. Reading Champions will be representatives in their tutor groups who fly the flag for the importance of reading. They meet regularly to come up with ideas for reading initiatives around the school. They will also be involved with the following:

• Planning and running World Book Day events within the school.
• A reading group with many other schools within the borough where we all read and discuss the same books.
• A borough wide literature quiz.
• Helping to organise and be part of author visits.
• Preparing to be part of the Student Librarian team when they transition into Y8.

During breaks and lunches, our library is predominantly run by Student Librarians. These are students in years 8-10 who are passionate about books and making our library a special place to be. As a student librarian, pupils perform the following tasks:

• Checking books in and out at the library desk.
• Selling stationery.
• Shelving books and keeping shelves/displays tidy.
• Helping to run the Reading Champion programme.
• Recommending books to the wider school community.

At the end of their time as a Student Librarian, pupils receive a certificate which outlines all the work experience they have gained through being a Student Librarian.  This also counts towards volunteer positions for the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
