World Book Day - Thursday 7th March 2024
World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and reading.
World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. As World Book Day founder, Baroness Gail Rebuck, recalls “We wanted to do something to reposition reading and our message is the same today as it was then – that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting, and has the power to transform lives.”
A book trail will take place around the school for Year 7 & 8 students. Poetry sessions will be held in the library during lunchtime. Additionally, The Masked Reader activity will run during form time, and various writing and art competitions will be launched across different departments.
On World Book Day, journalist and author Maya Oppenheim will visit to speak to Year 9 students. Maya, a correspondent at The Independent, released her book "The Pocket Guide to the Patriarchy" last August. Her visit will coincide with both World Book Day and International Women’s Day.
